About the speaker:

Li Kelin earned her PhD from Hong Kong University in 2009. Now she is a professor in Renmin University, Beijing. She teaches various subjects in aesthetics. Her research interests include contemporary French theories of literature and art, the philosophy of sensation, and contemporary European philosophy. She has published in the area of theory of sensation, modern aesthetic theory in China, philosophy of art, especially in relation to the works of modern and contemporary artwork.

Abstract:

As an imported word, the concept of "art"（艺术） has had an impact on different levels of the Chinese culture. In the process of Chinese translation of "art", the physical phenomenon comes up in the first place and requires the reaction and acceptance taken from the linguistic level. As a further consequence, the European idea of art stimulated Chinese intellectuals to reflect and re-evaluate traditional art. As the last point, while questioning the universality of art, if we zoom in our vision of the personal recognition and social evaluation of artists in the East and the West, we will hear resonance by another strength.
